Originally, the game was called "Rum" and was played using a standard deck of cards. As the game developed and grew in popularity, it was evenrummy all gametually dubbed The Holy Rummy. The slang term "rummy," which was once used to characterize someone who was strange or eccentric, is thought to have inspired the game's name. In keeping with the game's distinctive and unorthodox character, this term was eventually chosen as its name.
