Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit make up a "run," whereas three or four cards of the same rank but different suits make up a "set.". Players alternately draw cateen patturds from the discard pile or the stockpile, and at the conclusion of their turn, they discard one card. A set number of cards—usually seven or ten, depending on the variation being played—are dealt to each player at the start of the game. To begin the discard pile, the top card is positioned face-up, while the remaining cards make up the stockpile.
