Thomas Henshaw couldn't get away from his pocket kings just minutes after taking his seat Friday on Day 1c of the 2025 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, and it cost him his entire 60,000-chip starting stack.
The field, at the time of publishing, had over 1,300 players registered. Henshaw was the first player out the door, just moments after Jack Effel announced "shuffle up and deal." He ran into a preflop cooler against poker pro Yueqi Zhu and was unable to avoid busting with a hand that didn't improve with the five community cards.
Zhu, as he told PokerNews, raised to 600 from the button with AxAx. Michael Niegsch called from the small blind before Henshaw, the big blind, three-bet to 2,200 with KxKx. Action then returned to Zhu, who didn't want to slowplay the preflop nuts. He came back over the top for 8,200, forcing Niegsch out of the pot, while Henshaw called to see a flop.
The flop, which came out 2♥6♥Q♣, was bad for pocket kings as there wasn't much to be concerned with, but Henshaw checked it to the button, who continued for 8,200. That bet received a call before the 2♣paired the board on the turn. Henshaw decided against checking this time and instead led for 16,000. Zhu called to see the 6♦on the river.
Henshaw didn't put his opponent on a 6xor 2x, so he figured kings were good. As such, he moved all in only to be called by a better hand. That would be the last hand he played in the $10,000 World Championship event, and it came just a few minutes after the Day 1c session began.
Henshaw's quest to become the 2025 world champion didn't last long. But Zhu, who has over $3.7 million in live tournament cashes and a WSOP bracelet, earned a quick double-up to over 120,000.
