The latest World Poker Tour (WPT) champion was crowned last week in Las Vegas as Nebraska's Mike Vanier took down the WPT Choctaw Championship for $338,000, just two years after finished third in this same event.

The $3,500 event drew 586 runners for a prize pool of $2,051,000 that squeaked past the $2 million guarantee. The first three days of the event played out at Choctaw Casino in Durant, Oklahoma. Action then paused before picking back up at the Esports Arena Las Vegas at Luxor.

Vanier defeated heads-up opponent Mason Vieth, while the six-handed televized final table also included Lifu Zhang (3rd - $163,000), Charlie Adkins (4th - $122,000), Ryan Brown (5th - $92,000) and Logan Hoover (6th - $70,000).

Vanier Closes Out

Vanier, who finished third in the 2023 edition for $192,000, told WPT that he was happier with his performance this year.

“I wanted to keep the pots small, play post-flop and it worked out pretty good," said Vanier, who posed for winner's photos with his mother.

According to WPT updates, Vanier entered the six-handed final table as the chip leader and bided his time as Vieth made a full house to send Hoover out in sixth place and later flopped a set to crack the kings of fifth-place finisher Brown.

Vieth kept doing the dirty work as he rivered an ace to send Adkins out in fourth. Finally, it was Vanier's turn for a knockout as his ace-high held up to eliminate Zhang in third place and to enter heads-up play with a formidable chip lead, according to WPT.

Vanier slowly chipped away at his opponent before Veith doubled up into the lead with pocket kings. Viet then won a nearly 10-million-chip pot to have Vanier on the ropes, but Vanier found a much-needed double to be momentarily back in front.

Vieth again took the lead before a Vanier double ahead of a final confrontation where Vanier's ace-queen picked the ace-nine of Vieth.

Vanier isn't the only newcomer to WPT glory. Also on May 30, Art Peacock took down the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown Championship for $776,000 as he defeated heads-up opponent Mihai Niste.
