Phil Ivey 2025 WSOP

Phil Ivey's slow start to the 2025 World Series of Poker (WSOP) appears to have ended.

The 11-time bracelet winner not only recorded his first cash of the summer. He's among the big stacks in Event #38: $100,000 High Roller with 15 players remaining. Thomas Boivin and Ben Heath are also at the top of the leaderboard, all battling to win the gold bracelet and the $2,649,158 first-place prize.

Slow Start to 2025 WSOP No More

Ivey, second only to Phil Hellmuth's 17 bracelets won, has only made headlines once through the first two weeks of the 2025 WSOP, and that was for being involved in a goofy hand in which the floor was called over to rule on a questionable bet. But now he's making the news for doing what he does best — running deep in major tournaments.

The Poker Hall of Famer, at the time of publishing, had 6.6 million chips with the blinds at 50,000/100,000. He's locked up at least $203,960 after Taylor von Kriegenbergh was eliminated on the bubble.

The cash gives Ivey his 97th in his WSOP career, which spans more than a quarter-century. He has more than $50.6 million in total live tournament cashes, according to The Hendon Mob, and he's widely considered the greatest poker player of all time.

Ivey cashed 14 times at the 2024 WSOP, and he ended a 10-year bracelet drought when he took down the $10,000 Limit 2-7 Triple Draw Championship for $347,440. He has some ground to make up over the next six weeks if he's going to match last summer's results. But an even deeper run in the $100k would certainly be a start in the right direction.

Ivey isn't the only high-profile player who has started off the series slowly and reached the money in the High Roller. Chris Hunichen, the defending champion, has turned his slow start around by reaching the final table — eighth place — in the $1,500 Limit Hold'em, and he's joined Ivey among those who've locked up a cash in the largest buy-in event to this point at the 2025 WSOP.

"Big Huni" was one of the smallest stacks as the bubble approached. But he earned a crucial double-up against Adrian Mateos. He remained near the bottom of the chip counts at the time of publishing, but in better shape than earlier.

The remainder of the tournament will be available on livestream at PokerGO and via live reporting right here at PokerNews.
